ShipBob Order Routing Rules SOP

ShipBob's multi-warehouse routing decides which fulfillment center ships each order. Get it right and you save 20 percent on shipping costs. Get it wrong and you ship a Florida order from California, paying for 5-zone shipping when you could have shipped 1-zone.

Why this SOP matters

Routing rules directly hit margin. They also affect delivery speed promises on your site. A 2-day delivery commitment doesn't survive 5-zone ground shipping. SOPs make sure routing logic stays aligned with your customer promises.

Step-by-step SOP

  1. 1

List all your active warehouses in ShipBob

ShipBob expanded its network. Verify which warehouses you're actually using vs what's enabled. Sometimes the routing tries warehouses you don't have inventory at.

  2. 2

Set warehouse priority by customer zone

Build a zone map. East Coast orders to Pennsylvania warehouse, West Coast to California, Midwest to Dallas. Configure this in routing rules.

  3. 3

    Configure split-shipment rules

When an order has items at different warehouses, do you split or wait? Splitting costs more in shipping but is faster. Set the rule explicitly.

  4. 4

    Set inventory sync to real-time

Confirm Shopify inventory and ShipBob inventory sync at least every 15 minutes. Lag causes oversells.

  5. 5

    Configure bundle SKU routing

Bundles need their components mapped. Verify each bundle has the components defined and stock levels reflect parent + child.

  6. 6

    Set up routing exception alerts

Slack notifications when routing fails. Failed routes mean orders don't ship until manually resolved.

  7. 7

Test with a real order monthly

Place a test order, watch which warehouse it routes to. Confirm it matches the rules. Routing logic drifts after platform updates.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ×Not mapping warehouses to customer zones (orders ship from the wrong coast)
  • ×Forgetting to update routing when adding a new warehouse to your ShipBob account
  • ×Bundle components not synced, causing 'out of stock' errors on items that exist
  • ×No exception alert configured, so failed orders sit in a queue invisible to ops
  • ×Not testing after ShipBob platform updates (their routing logic has changed twice in the last year)

Stop rewriting this SOP every quarter

Record your screen while performing the shipbob order routing rules. ReccordSOP turns the recording into a SOP with timestamped screenshots. When your live setup changes, drift detection flags it.

FAQ

How do I decide between split shipments and waiting?

If the items are cheap and shipping is free, split. If the items are heavy or shipping is paid by customer, wait. Document the threshold.

What's the right inventory sync frequency?

Real-time if your AOV is over $50 or items go out of stock quickly. Every 15 minutes for everyone else. Hourly is too slow for popular products.

Should I use ShipBob's routing or build my own?

Use ShipBob's. Building your own routing logic on top of theirs creates conflicts and breaks at the worst time.

I built ReccordSOP after watching too many DTC ops teams lose months to undocumented workflows. These SOPs are battle-tested with Shopify operators running $1M to $50M brands.
