Setting up a Smile.io points program takes 30 minutes. Most of that 30 minutes determines your loyalty point liability for the next 3 years. This SOP gets the configuration right at launch.

Why this SOP matters

Earning rates baked in at launch are hard to change. Customers have already accumulated points at the launch rate. Lowering it later creates anger. Get the math right the first time.

Step-by-step SOP

  1. 1

    Set earning rate at 5-10 points per $1 spent

    Smile.io defaults to 5 points per dollar with rewards starting at 500 points = $5 off. Sensible default.

    Configure redemption ratios in clean ratios

    500 points = $5 off, 1000 = $12, 2000 = $30. Stepped reward at higher tiers.

  3. 3

    Set point expiry at 12 months of inactivity

    Not from earning date. Reset on each engagement. Balances liability with fairness.

  4. 4

    Configure bonus point actions

    100 points for review. 200 points for referral. 500 points for first subscription. Drive the behaviors you want.

  5. 5

    Limit one reward per order

    Stacking multiple rewards creates margin disasters at scale. Hardcode the limit.

  6. 6

    Set up earning multiplier for subscribers

    2x points on subscription orders. Drives subscription conversion.

  7. 7

    Display points prominently in checkout

    Show points earned for this order, total balance, distance to next reward. Don't hide this.

    Monitor point liability monthly

    Total outstanding points × redemption value. Healthy is 1-2 percent of monthly revenue.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • ×Setting earning rate too generously (10+ points per dollar) creating unsustainable liability

  • ×No display in checkout, program runs invisibly
